This event is SOLD OUT.

On 31 October, Mike Leigh's biopic Mr Turner starring actor Timothy Spall is released.
The films follows the last 25 years of Turner’s life, when he spent time in Margate and stayed at Sophia Booth’s guesthouse, where the Turner Contemporary gallery is now situated.

Go behind the scenes with artist Tim Wright as he reveals how he taught actor Timothy Spall how to paint as Turner in the two years leading up to the production of the film. Tim Wright will be accompanied by artist Charlie Cobb, a specialist in producing historical recreations for the film and entertainment industries including Star Wars and The Queen, reproduced a number of JMW Turner’s acclaimed works for the Mr Turner film set.

Wright devised a 24-month painting programme for Timothy Spall, which included a study of basic painting techniques, before moving on to Turner's style, as well as trips to the Tate to study the painter's archive. The culmination of Spall’s training was a full-size copy of Turner's Snow Storm - Steam-Boat off a Harbour's Mouth Making Signals in Shallow Water, and Going by the Lead from 1842. The paintings shown as works in progress in the film were produced by Charlie Cobb which Timothy Spall occasionally added brushstrokes and texture to in particular scenes of the film.
In addition to Tim Wright and Charlie Cobb sharing their stories of working on the set of one of the most celebrated films of 2014, behind the scenes film footage of the making of Mr Turner will be shown.

Mr Turner follows the last 25 years of Turner’s life, when he spent time in Margate and stayed at Sophia Booth’s guesthouse, where Turner Contemporary is now situated. Timothy Spall’s role as the great British Master JMW Turner is regarded as the actor’s career-defining performance for which he won the best actor award at the Cannes film festival this year.
