  • Chairman of the British Guild of  Travel Writers Roger Bray presents the Globe Award to Director Victoria Pomery for Best Overall Winner of the 2011 Tourism Awards. Turner Contemporary also won the Best UK Tourism Project.

Last night, Turner Contemporary won two prestigious awards at the British Guild of Travel Writers’ Annual Gala; Best UK destination and Best Global destination.

The event is the UK’s premier occasion for the travel industry to recognise the world’s most innovative and newest tourism projects following nominations from members of the Guild, the professional association for journalists, editors, photographers, and radio and film broadcasters working in the travel field from Britain.

The Guild Tourism Awards are presented for successful and environmentally sustainable projects that benefit local communities.

The UK’s top travel professionals attended the ceremony, and Turner Contemporary Director Victoria Pomery was there to receive both awards.

“We are delighted to have received these two prestigious awards from the British Guild of Travel Writers. It has been a fantastic opening seven months for Turner Contemporary. With over 300,000 visits to date we are establishing ourselves as a top UK tourism destination, and with exhibitions of work by JMW Turner and Tracey Emin coming up next year, we are looking forward with great excitement to 2012.”
