  • John Kampfner, Chair Turner Contemporary; Victoria Pomery, Director Turner Contemporary; Ed Vaizey Minister for Culture, Communications and Creative Industries

Ed Vaizey MP Minister for Culture, Communications and the Creative Industries today visited Turner Contemporary.

The Minister met with members of staff and joined a forum of representatives from regional government, arts, tourism and business to gather a range of perspectives on the importance of the gallery to the town and the wider region.

Impressed by the acclaim surrounding our launch in April, the Minister wanted to see for himself the positive impact the gallery is having on Margate. Turner Contemporary has already attracted over 130,000 visitors in its first 2 months of operation. With around 50% of these visits from outside Thanet, the gallery is already drawing visitors into the area and generating valuable tourism spend in the town.

“I am a passionate supporter of the Turner Contemporary.  Margate has played an important role in inspiring some truly great and important British Art so it is fantastic that this space is now open for local people and visitors to the town.  It is also a huge resource for Margate in terms of improving skills and education”- Ed Vaizey Minister for Culture, Communications and Creative Industries
