20 April 2012

6 - 10pm Throughout the whole gallery Free

To celebrate Turner Contemporary's 1st birthday exhibiting artist Hamish Fulton leads a unique group walk (to take part email sangiama@turnercontemporary.org), we'll have performances by composer and producer Jim Perkins with artist Em Cooper, the Musarc choir, and our Art of Sound particpants will come together to play their specially composed music for the event. All this plus dining in our Café!

Hamish Fulton
Hamish Fulton has made walking the basis of his practice for the past three decades, producing photography, text and sketches that evolve from the experience of solo and group walks in the landscape. His work is currently on show at Turner Contemporary, in our exhibition Walk.
Be a part of a unique group walk conducted by Fulton especially to commemorate our first birthday. Email sangiama@turnercontemporary.org to take part.

Emergence, by Jim Perkins and Em Cooper
Emergence is the culmination of a year-long project that saw Perkins pair
his vocal score with Cooper’s visceral hand painted stop-motion animation.

Their collaboration blossomed from a shared interest in Emergence as a philosophical concept. The score and animation were created in parallel, each new sonic experiment or painted idea being sent over  to inform the work of the other. Oil-paint animation is relatively rare technique, with few people currently  practicing it: the animation is created by painting each frame by hand on  acetate or glass, before taking a photograph from above and repainting the frame for the next shot. It is laborious and slow.

Perkins’ score combines traditional soprano performance with contemporary digital music technology using techniques such as real time manipulation of sound, time stretching, granulation and pitch shifts.

Musarc: Corpus Sonus
Corpus Sonus is a new piece for choir and dictaphones developed by Musarc specifically for Late Night Live: Landmark. Based on an original idea by sound artist and ensemble member Sam Belinfante, Corpus Sonus begins with a live performance of William Byrd's Ave Verum Corpus followed by variations of the early 17c motet using dictaphone recordings made by each individual singer during the performance itself.

Musarc will perform the piece four times throughout the evening, each time using the recording devices as a tool to produce a new variation, involving different ways of playback and changing configurations of the choir in the gallery. The four variations have been developed from responses by other ensemble members to the original score, and touch on ideas such as the choir as a body of sound, recording and the 'disembodied' voice, the notion of space in musical performance, or the building as an instrument.

Musarc is a research and teaching programme based at the Faculty of Architecture and Spatial Design, London Metropolitan University, exploring the role of music, sound and listening in the context of architecture and the built environment. Musarc's choir is formed from an eclectic group of artists, architects, musicians and professionals from various backgrounds who share a keen interest in singing and experiment. It performs traditional choral material as well as contemporary music and commissions challenging work that explores new territory in music and performance.

art of sound performance
The art of sound is an exciting collaboration between Turner Contemporary and Pie Factory Music, that introduces young people who wouldn't normally have access to the relevant resources, to art and music and gives them the opportunity to create their own work. At Late Night Live: Landmark, the particpants will perform their specially composed music, inspired by JMW Turner and Hamish Fulton. See a film of their work here.
