Can you come up with a name for London Array's new crew transfer vessel? If so, you could win an overnight VIP trip and £500 for your school!
Use your imagination
The challenge is to come up with a name for the third and final crew transfer vessel being supplied by Gardline to service London Array from the wind farm's base at Ramsgate Port.
The 17m aluminium catamaran, or Alicat - specifically designed to transfer technicians to offshore sites - is due to enter service in early summer. The two Gardline boats already at work are called Marianarray and the Smeaton Array, but there's no reason why the this vessel has to have 'array' in its name.
Students can be as creative as they like with their entries, but the judges suggest they consider the local area and its features, links to renewable energy, the marine environment or science and technology when thinking of a name. The winning name will be picked by a panel from London Array and Gardline with final approval given by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency.

The Prize
The successful student will not only win £500 for their school, but also an overnight trip for themselves and their immediate family or guardians to Gardline's shipyard in Great Yarmouth over the summer holidays.
The prize includes transport there and back, overnight hotel accommodation and dinner for for up to four people, a private tour of the shipyard and the chance to take a trip out to sea in one of Gardline's modern fleet of crew transfer vessels.

About London Array
London Array is being built 20km off the Kent coast in the outer Thames Estuary. Construction on Phase One of the development is due to be complete by the end of 2012. It includes 175 turbines with a combined capacity of 630MW, two offshore substations and four underwater export cables linking the substations to the shore. Phase One of London Array will be the world's largest offshore wind farm, generating enough energy to power more than 470,000* homes. A proposed second phase would bring total capacity up to 1,000MW.
