This 18 month project aims to reveal the relationships coastal residents have with the sea.
Through an exciting programme of events, the local stories, history, myths and personal narratives of the people and places associated with the Thanet coast will be shared.
The tales will be turned into imaginative animations that will be screened in our new gallery as part of an exciting late night event this autumn.
Sea Whisperers events
From October to December 2010, our exhibition space at Droit House on Margate’s Stone Pier was transformed into a ‘Curiosity Sea Shop’.
Here, local residents shared their weird and wonderful sea stories at our ‘Whispering Booth’, listened to other stories at a sea pod and added an object relating to their ‘whisper’ to the shop. Hear their tales at the bottom of this page.
We also held a series of free sea-themed weekend events where local enthusiasts, shanty crews and storytellers helped visitors to tell their tales. Watch a video on our Vimeo page and view a copy of our Seazine publication.
Students from the University for the Creative Arts are in the process of producing their animations taken from the stories told at our events for the late night event we're holding this autumn. Watch their works-in-progress on our Vimeo channel and on Youtube.
We held a family animation workshop with artist Reza Ben Gejra on 24 and 25 August 2011, see the animation at the bottom of this page.
Sea Whisperers continues until June 2012, with regular sea-related events taking place, and culminating in a four day arts festival that celebrates Thanet’s rich maritime history and local artists’ work. Sign up to our e-newsletter to find out when each event is happening.
The Boat Project
To sail alongside Sea Whisperers, we are a host organisation for The Boat Project, the South East artist commission for the Cultural Olympiad.
